Eating can be the most expensive part of a trip to napa. getting a house and cooking breakfast and dinner will save a bunch of money. places to look for a house are vrbo.com (look under wine country) or craigslist.org (look under vacation rentals in san fran).

look into doing tours at Round Pond for Olive Oil, Del Dotto, Castello de Amarosa, and Sterling. V. Sattui has lots of great wines, and an awesome place for lunch.

Great burger stand is Taylor's Refresher, the Rutherford Grill is a great place for dinner, and there is no corkage fee.

Great books to look at are Napa and Sonoma Day by Day, and The Wine Country Handbook, both are from Frommers.

hope this helps get you started.

I am planning a group trip for my mother's 70th birthday (2010)for just her and the daughters/in-laws. There will be 8 of us all together. All but one will be coming out of Chicago the last one from NY. For starters any suggestions on time of year to vist, we are pretty open and the actual b-day is August.

For starters, are we better off doing hotels are looking into house rentals? Either way were do I start, I am afraid to pick something at random since we have never been there before. We are a typical Irish fun loving group and for 70 the ol'lady is pretty spry. I am assuming we will need transpotation.

Any starting help is appreciated. I know I am starting early but this gives me time to do my research so it can be enjoyable for all of us.
