Vineyards and wineries are open year round. I love going wine tasting or visiting wine country in the Spring and Fall. In the Fall, the vineyards are in full bloom and hanging full with fruit. And it's still warm and sunny outside but not ridiculously hot. Spring is also a really pretty time of year too.

The only reason I would come in the winter is for fewer crowds and more one on one attention from winery staff members in the tasting room. And - if you are staying at hotels, resorts, etc - the rates are significantly lower in Winter time. Still pretty scenery but the vineyards are bare and if it's your first trip out here, not exactly picturesque.

Summer is okay but everyone is out here too. And it can get very hot. Oh, and rates tend to be sky-high for lodging. Though, in the current economy, folks are trying to be a bit more reasonable with rates this year!

My experience: late September and October are beautiful and busy. I've not visited in the summer. December/January can be rainy and overcast, but everything is open, and we did have a few sunny, gorgeous days. April is perfect - beautiful weather and not so crowded. No matter when you visit, you are bound to have a lovely time!

We are looking at our first trip to Napa and was wondering if there is a better time of year to visit.

Are all vineyards open year round? Is the scenery better in a particular season?
