damombo,Thank you for allowing me to enjoy your experience vicariously. I would like to think I have the capability of building the room myself once we get rid of a few children. We'll see. [This message has been edited by RichardSE (edited 04-15-2011).] IP: 64.129.12.112 |

My darling husband decided that we needed a dedicated place to store the wine properly. We have a house at Canyon Lake, between Austin and San Antonio, where you will find us every weekend and where we plan to retire one of these days. He read and studied and planned and dreamed for a while, and when we returned from our last trip to Napa/Sonoma, he decided that a dozen or so cases just sitting on the floor in the corner was silly and unattractive and not really too great for the wine. He has now nearly completed the room: it is a simple 4 x 8 x 8 room that will hold somewhere between 700-800 bottles. He plans to use the Vintage View racks. The room has been encased/covered/whatever in plastic to hold in the humidity and is insulated and sheetrocked and paneled. He wants to install the cooling unit as soon as we get back from our trip. We will be ordering the racks this weekend so that they will be here by the time we return from the trip. Very exciting! and simply functional - not a show piece by any means, but that is what we wanted and what we had room for - we don't need a wine cellar to drink wine in, we have the lake to go out onto and sip our wine on the boat - life is good And I do believe a good name for the room would be "Empty Nest, but Full Glass" HA- my kids will appreciate thatIP: 96.8.187.200 |

I have no answers for you damombo, but I am interested in knowing what you're building. As soon as we get rid of a few more kids, I'm going to build a wine room.IP: 75.85.130.54 |

Damombo, If I were going to build a wine cellar, I would call the specialists at Wine Enthusiast. They have design specialists and they have several different coolers. That is what I would do. Just sayin'. http://www.wineenthusiast.com/wine-cellar-design.asp?icid=TNVWNCLLRDSGNIP: 68.169.189.111 |

Ok...and we're talkin' GOOD stuff, right? Not just the dregs from the old box-wine! My go-to product research site is consumersearch.com. Love them because they do all the comparitive work for you and boil all that down to the brass tacks in terms that you can understand. They tell you their sources, and link you to the original articles if you want to know more. Great site and I've used them for years and years. I didn't see wine cooling systems on the list of things they have done lately, but go see if its under another terminolgy. Both Wine Enthusiast and Wine Specatator have archives with reviews of wine related products. I usually do a site search for the item I'm looking into; I checked on WS and they do have a few things on wine cellar cooling systems. Epinions can be good- but lots of times the reviews are too opinionated ( fraught with emotion) to really tell if they are credible. I always feel like I spend more time there than its worth in the long run, but this is an off-beat item so you may not have to filter through so much gobbledy-gook. A quick google search ( since I was intrigued by this project of yours) also brought 2 websites that are generic ( not obviously related to any one company or product) and dedicated to wine coolers. www.winecoolerexpert.org and www.winecellarcoolers.org a quick ( very quick) breeze through them makes me think that they are general information with product reviews and I couldn't tell at a glance that they were sponsored by any particular company. You may have already tried/seen them, but that's what I've got. You might call some of the wineries that you visit there and ask what system they use... IP: 98.232.221.183 |

Does anyone have any experience with wine cellar cooling systems? Mr. Damombo is building a wine cellar/closet/room (whatever you want to call a room to store wine in) and I've seen Wine Guardian, WhiperKool, CellarPro, and CellarCool. We are trying to find reviews on each of these manufacturers so that we can decide on which to get. It's a fairly substantial investment and obviously we want to get a reliable unit - so any thoughts? Thanks!IP: 96.8.187.200 |
