Well, My Napa knowledge is pretty scarce, so that part needs to be left with the experts here. I can help with Sonoma, but that is likely to be a small part of your trip if you are based in Napa at the Meritage.
Good event calendars that look at both counties are available here at Winecountry, and at winecountrythisweek.com.
Either should help with any festival-style events in either county. For the spouses, how about a cooking class at the CIA one day while the others are at the conference?
Plenty of spa choices in either area...a Calsitoga Mud Bath might be a fun for something a bit out of the ordinary.
If you decide to spend time in Sonoma, head over to that board and I can be more helpful to you there.
Its been pretty quiet on the boards lately but hopefully one of the Napa experts will pipe up soon. In the meantime, try those sites I mentioned and look through some of the "things to do" on on this board

thank you. we will arrive in Napa on october 1st, for 7 nights. I did see and read some info regarding the stomp and other festivities. I would very much enjoy a variety of activities, including the stomp. Festivals, wine tours, and wine tasting rooms are on the list. Maybe a day at the spa for the girls. What about the hot air balloon tours? We enjoy red wines. we are wine virgins and so we would be happy with the recommendation of any good winery or tasting room. Our goal, enjoy the region, the wine, and some romantic time away from home.

ajack,
What are your dates? The first weekend in October is the Sonoma County Harvest Fair and that is a very fun event ( IMO) that you could easily enjoy during a weekend day. It includes not only wine events but jazz music, animal judging and the grape stomp competition among other things.
There are lots of special things going on in Sonoma County in early October because of harvest, so check the events calendars on your favorite websites. Would be happy to explore it further on the Sonoma board if you like...don't want to poach here on Napa.
It helps to know what wines you like and what your "vision" is for the trip when making suggestions; do you want to just taste or do tours?, do you have interest in "other than wine" activities?, that sort of thing.
