I second RC's opinion that there is no bad time to go!

But most of the grapes will probably have been harvested by then. Plenty of leaves left on the vines and lots of wonderful aroma in the air, what with the crushing of grapes all over the valley...

And actually, both September and October are considered busy times of the year. We have been various times throughout September and October and although busy, we've never encountered bad crowds. Once, at PlumpJack, we did just turn around and leave due to the crowd, but that was the only time.

One suggestion would be to plan out your visits to make the best use of right-turning only. Then at least traffic will be less annoying. Plot out on a map where the wineries are that you want to visit, and make a logical progression without a lot of back tracking.

Have fun!

There is not a bad time to go to Wine Country in my opinion!

That being said, October could very well be the best month to go. I wouldn't worry about the vines being bare....I was just there in May when no fruit was on the vines only buds.

The weather should be perfect and all the activities going on....no problems with October.

I am planning my first trip to Napa. Is the second week of October a good time? When does harvest end? I don't want to go when all the grapes are gone and the vines are bare. Is September better? I've read where September is very crowded.

All times are ET (US)
