We spent four days in San Francisco on a business trip prior to going to Napa Valley. We were treated to a tour to wine country by my wife’s boss along with 3 other couples(we didn’t have a say in the wineries visited but I enjoyed it none the less). Wednesday, August 22
We left the hotel at 9:30 a.m. and our first stop was at Cakebread Cellars and our host was Shane. He did an exceptional job and we tasted a 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, 2010 Chardonnay, 2009 Chardonnay Reserve, 2009 Merlot, 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 Syrah. I enjoyed the Reds while my wife enjoyed the whites. Very nice for our first stop. We didn’t buy any wine here because we can get most all of it back home.
Next, we went to Far Niente and Vincent was our host. The tastings included 2010 Estate Bottled Chardonnay, 2008 Cave Collection Chardonnay, 2009 Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon and a 1999 Cave Collection Cab. All in our group concurred that the 1999 was not very good(I think it was past its prime). Nothing really stood out to me and as usual my wife enjoyed the white wines. We did get to see the owner’s car collection and he had one car that had been appraised for 2.8 million. I believe it was a 1966 Ferrari…quite an impressive collection of cars.
Our next stop was V. Sattui for lunch. It was a bit crowded but we picnicked on the grounds in perfect weather.
Our final stop for the day was at Cliff Lede. Our host here was Tom and as someone on this board said before (it may have been Hawkeye) that the host can make your tour and wine more enjoyable and it seemed to be the case for me. Here we tasted 2009 Breggo Chardonnay, 2009 Breggo Pinot Noir, 2009 Cliff Lede “Cinnamon Rhapsody” Cab and a 2008 “Songbook” Cab. I enjoyed all and we purchased 2 bottles of Sauvignon Blanc, 2 of the Songbook and 2 of the Cinnamon Rhapsody. Tom was an exceptional host and this was my favorite stop for the day. All in all a great day but I could hardly wait to come back in 3 days.
