Had the opportunity to try wines from Andy Peay, Richard Matthiasson and Richard Betts today at an event in Charleston.
Nothing stands out- Peay's Chard and Pinot were okay, and perhaps well done from a technical standpoint, but neither really made my boat float. Matthiasson was also ok, but nothing to stop the show. His Chard was more oaked than I prefer, but not excessively so, and the Napa Cab was good, but it wasn't one to write home over IMO.
Steven BEtts, whom you may know from his My Essentials line, was an interesting man to meet, and I will give kudos to a guy who gives a 2-3 finger pour at a tasting event, but the wines are not special. He offered a Merlot, Bordeaux Blend, Sauv. Blanc and one other which I don't recall at the moment...
He's a great spokesman and very engaging fellow, but the wine he brought to the event was just noting special- kinda "one note" to our palates. We aren't aficionados, so maybe that's where the trouble lies, but on a 10 point scale we wouldn't have given any of the wines more than a 4....
Sorry guys....
