Hello Hawkeye,

I've been meaning to try Hunnicutt ever since they became a GEMs winery. I just haven't had the time. Thank you for your review. Maybe next January I'll be able to visit.

Thursday night we were invited to a special tasting of Hunnicutt wines at St. John's Meeting Place (a division of the restaurant). In all my years of attending local tastings, I have never seen this large of a crowd.

There was a small plate of hors d'oeuvres placed in front of us to compliment the wine we were about to taste.

The wines were poured and lined up in front of us beginning with the 2012 Chardonnay with grapes sourced from the Coombsville and Rutherford. This was Mrs. Hawkeye's favorite (yes, she is partial to Chards). It had fruit and citrus nuances which are her favorites.

Next was my favorite, the 2011 edition of their Cab. It was well balanced with fruit and berries and a finish with fine tannins. An overall delight.

The third wine was their blend, the Hunnicutt fearless Red under the CUTT label. Although not my favorite, it was drinking well.

Justin Hunnicutt Stephens, the owner, was in attendance and described each variety as we tasted. He has a passion for what he is doing and it shows. His winemaker is Kirk Venge who we particularly like. He has his own label, Venge, which we particularly enjoy. He is also the winemaker at another of our favorites, Tresspass.

If you are in the process of planning a Napa visit, I highly recommend a visit to taste Hunnicutt wines. They are now on our March itinerary.
