We have been enjoying a Petite Sirah from Segehsio lately. I think it first came in a club shipment. We opened it and boy, were we surprised. I had the notion that I wasn't wild about Petite Sirah. I do believe that I am wild about this particular Petite Sirah. Probably because it is HUGE and full bodied and oh so jammy

2007 Passalaqua Primotivo!
Rich red color, excellent body, perfectly balanced between fruit and acid....just plain deelish

Greetings to all. I hope you are well and enjoying some good wines lately.
Here is a new one for us, Petite Sirah.
We had the 2006 Ledson Sonoma Valley Petite Sirah last night.
I have to say that I generally find this variety to be awfully rough, almost like drinking sandpaper. Its really not a wine we have much experience with and its very low on our priority list, but it seems to be a popular one to distribute as a wine club wine, so we have several.
This particular wine has a beautiful inky color that lightens when you swirl the glass- pretty cool, really; it goes from being nearly black to a lovely deep burgundy as the light shines through. The aromas remind me of blueberry for some reason, which Left Brain says is ridiculous, so maybe my allergies are in the way of a true assesment.
This is definitely a wine to allow to breathe for a good half hour if not more, otherwise its very tannic and does go down like sandpaper. After it softens though, its actually not a bad wine at all. We had it with barbecued chicken and it was a good pairing.

Opened a bottle of Glen Lyon's "Suzy's Toast" last night to rave reviews from friends and neighbors.
This is an unusual offering of 100% Rousanne and made a delightful pre-dinner beverage.
Its really light, but very fruit-forward so you get this burst of flavor with each sip and then its gone. You could enjoy this as we did, before dinner on a warm evening (we haven't hit hot yet but it would work then, too!) or to drink alone, and it does go well with white cheeses and not too salty crackers.

Ok, so here are the other non-zin/cab wines that interested us
From Wilson- The Sauv. Blanc is outstanding if you are from the non-herbaceous,more toward tropicals camp. This one is very crisp and grapefruity.
From FieldStone- aside from the rose and the Petite Sirah mentioned elsewhere, the Viognier. Really nice wine with some body and a little floral on the nose.
Haywood- The Primotivo is outstanding and they offer the 100% stainless fermented Chard
At Auldessa, the Tempest. This is a very surprising and totally delicious blend of co-fermented Syrah and Viognier. Yeah, it doesn't compute mentally, but it's a knockout on the palate.
Zina Hyde Cunninham- Dry Riesling. REally nice Riesling that is fruit-forward without being sweet.

Ok, so we're doing well here, gang. Thanks for taking this on with me.
I'm particularly glad that we started this now because in our tours, which usually included time with the winemakers, I tried to remember to ask why they chose to work in Sonoma County which has so much less cache'than Napa and they all replied that it's because there is so much more diversity in the grapes that can be grown over in Sonoma. In the words of one of the winemakers, " Napa is pretty much a one trick pony. If you really want to stretch yourself you work over here."
Who knew???
One of the things we haven't touched on as yet is rose`, so let me start some conversation on that....apparently there is a growing trend throughout the wine world toward educating folks that a good rose` is nothing like the sweet slop that people associate with the name. We were offered some form of a Rose` at about a third of the wineries we visited.
Interestingly, there are lots of grapes that will make a very good Rose` if given the chance.
On this trip, we were given a very special bottle of Cinsault Rose` as a gift when our tour group stopped at Auldessa. This is a special wine that Eric makes just for the winery folks- it doesn't even get labeled.
What a treat. If you ever find someone making this you should try it- very light in color and body, the flavor is unexpectedly bold.
We also had a great Rose` of Petite Sirah and bought some at FieldStone. The color is a garnet red...think grenache-like. A lot of flavor comes from this, as you might expect. Would be great with a grilled meat, or game like venison.
Schug offered a Pinot Rose`, which was not at all to our taste, but someone who wants a quick burst of flavor as opposed to a wine with some lasting finish may like it. It tasted ok, but there was nothing to it if you get my drift. We had another that was much better up county around Dry Creek, but I forget who had it. Will follow up on that.
Those are the 3 from the top of my head, but I know there were more. I'll get out my tasting sheets and add on later.

OK, if we have to get off the good reds, let's look for some others.

Sojurn Cellars in Sonoma town, 4 excellent Pinots.

Merriam Winery just south of Healdsburg and off Limerick Lane, A Windacre Vineyard Merlot that was very good. Plus, they have a Russian River Valley Chard that was quite good.

Carjeff, we also prefer the citrus style of Chard over the slick buttery. It seems that many of the wineries are getting away from that style according to my travels.

Since you are limiting me, this is all I can come up with at this time.

I like the sound of those Chards, carjeff. We will have some time in Sonoma VAlley next trip so I will put Landmark on the list of new places to try.
Am completely shocked that you saw a Mauritson wine outside of California...
when we last spoke with them they did not distribute outside CA.

I'd second the Mauritson Sauvignon Blanc. I was surprised to see it on the wine list of a restaurant on Newbury St in Boston during a business trip last year.

I would highly recommend Landmark for a winery that DOESN'T have a Zin or a Cab. They make several fantastic Chardonnays (fortunately not the oaky, buttery kind), several Pinots, and a Syrah. All excellent, reasonably priced wines.

Merry Edwards for several different Pinots, and a supposedly great Sauvignon Blanc (they were sold out of it when I was there).

Those are the 2 wineries that come to mind from my last visit.

Mauritson has a Sauv Blanc? Wow! HOw did I miss that, I wonder? ( Probably too busy with the Rockpile Zin flight to notice)
In the whites category, we really liked the one that is offered at Seghesio....It starts with "F"....Fiona, maybe? And Bill Frick makes a dynamite Grenache Blanc.
We had a terrific Sauv. Blanc from Trecini on our last trip...the 2008, I think it was.
Are you a fan of the "Grassy, herbaceous" style ( as in the ones from New Zealand) or the more citrus, crisp ones?

One that comes to mind right away is the Sauvignon Blanc from Mauritson. I wish I had more for the hot evenings that will soon be upon us here in Arkansas.

We have all discussed our Zin and Cab fetishes over time, but we don't say too much about the other wines in Sonoma County.
I'd like make this thread about wines OTHER than those two.
I'd like to get as broad as we can with this, so anything goes except those 2 varietals...ok?
Have you got anything to offer?
