We went to Bayleaf for my sons birthday. I had eaten here a couple of years ago and had enjoyed the restaurant, but this time I was appalled. We were promptly seated and our orders taken. We also received our lovely salads and warm bread in an unhurried but appropriate time frame, but from that point on it was as if we had become invisible! Our waiter became the bartender and flirted with women at the bar, and the owner fawned over a large table of folks who seemed to know him personally. The young man who brought the bread was the only one who stopped back by our table. He offered more bread (which was tasty). My mother ordered Pork Scaloppini and was served Scallops which she could not eat, so we waved down the owner as he passed. He took her plate and returned not long after with the scaloppini, but never offered an apology. I had a honeyed lamb shank, which the waiter assured me would be extremely tender and just about fall off the bone it was tough! I left much of the meat ON the bone as it was too difficult to cut off with any grace as it sat in a bowl of overly seasoned sauce (yes I have had this dish in another restaurant in the past, so I do know how good it CAN be). My grandmother had the salmon - she enjoyed the fish, but it was served with a bean ragout and about half the beans were dry and hard, not cooked enough. My sons steak was very nice and my moms scaloppini, when she finally got it, was also quite nice. Following dinner we waited a good 10-15 minutes for our plates to be taken away and another 18 minutes (we were timing it by now) before finally got the hostess attention and asked her for our bill. We could see our waiter, but he never even looked our way. He did bring the bill, but there was no offer of coffee or dessert only a sorry I got held up at the bar. Our bill was about $170 and we left $200. We would have left a much smaller tip (or none!) but we didnt want to wait any longer for our change. What an expensive disappointment. I eat out quite often and the food quality at Bayleaf could easily be surpassed by so many other restaurants in the valley - at much less cost in many - but it was the service I found to be absolutely without excuse. I will never patronize this restaurant again and will certainly let anyone who asks know about my experience. I have read online at other sites about diners having similar disappointing experiences at Bayleaf - wish I had read them before we went. Amazing. It was, by the way, a quiet Sunday evening, so they were not too busy by any means.
