Yesilovewine,

I would agree with you on Meritage. We went there during our trip a few years ago, and it was our least favorite out of the 4 restaurants we dined at. Not bad, but just not on a par with the others.

Too bad, I just realized that it was Hawkeye's friend Kandace at Biale that recommended it.

This is from my trip report:

Dinner

Sonoma Meritage - Just ok. The food was good, and so was the service, but didn’t compare to the other meals on the trip. Not bad, but nothing memorable.

On our May 2011 trip for the Sonoma Reserve, we had dinner in town two nights. The daily tours ended and returned to the start point between 5 and 5:30, and after all that drinking some serious dinner was needed.
First night we had dinner at Meritage. Originally we were going to go for Italian but when Left Brain saw "Martini Bar" in the name, well that was all she wrote.
We arrived just before the end of happy hour so oysters were half price. I don't touch the things, but he does and he ordered the BBq'd and the Venetian. He is still talking about the Venetian Oysters, so they must have been REALLY good.
He had the Babyback Boar Ribs and I had the Poppyseed crusted Salmon. We both enjoyed our meal but I felt that my portion was extremely small for the money.
We were unfortunately seated in the bar area, and right at the corner of the bar where an appealling young woman was seated and getting the attention of several young men who were standing 3 deep at the bar and intruding on our space to some degree. I guess that being moved wasn't an option because it was not offered and we did notice several reserved tables in the other side which looks more like the dining room.
I think this is very much a local hangout.
Personally, I think the hype for Meritage is over done; too loud, small portions and food adequate but not stellar ( well, maybe the Venetian oysters ) Not likely to return.
Night 2 we dined at Saddles, the restaurant at MacArthur Place. Totally different experience that I would happily repeat several times over.
We chose this place because this was the day for Cab tours and we felt it appropriate to end with steaks. Very pleasant atmosphere with a cozy fire in the fireplace and fun murals depicting a stable with horses and other farm animals all around.
Left Brain had the NY Strip and I had the Filet. Both were perfectly cooked and delicious.
For those of you who bring groups to the area, this would be a nice place to eat one night as there are at least 2 large rooms that are set aside for private parties.
