Movies you can "wine" about

California’s storied wine country has been the location of a number of interesting movies. The agricultural scenery has been the back-drop to romances, comedies, and dramas. Sometimes, even the wine plays a role.

If you are interested in a wine country theme for your video and theatre viewing, don’t over look the following movies:

Sideways(2004)
Comedy, Drama.
Alexander Payne’s new movie “Sideways” unfolds around a wine tasting trip as two men approach different crossroads in their lives. Art mimics life as the future is toasted, the friends get tanked, reality is tested, and responsibility is questioned.
Cast:
Paul Giamatti
Thomas Haden Church
Virginia Madsen
Sandra Oh

The Parent Trap (1998)
Comedy, Family, Romance.
This is a charming Disney remake of an old favorite. It is nicely updated with more of a focus on the adult romance, as well as the children’s madcap shenanigans. Portions were filmed at the Staglin Family Vineyard in Rutherford
Cast:
Lindsay Lohan
Dennis Quaid
Natasha Richardson

A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
Drama, Romance, War.
A young unmarried and pregnant woman meets a solder returning from World War II on a bus as she travels home. Afraid of her domineering father, the girl is accompanied home by the solder who poses as her husband. More than passions ignite in this nice romance. Extensive Napa Valley locations including:
Mount Veeder Winery, Napa
Mayacamas Winery, Napa
Beringer Vineyards, St. Helena
Charles Krug Winery, St. Helena
Duckhorn Vineyards, St. Helena
Cast:
Keanu Reeves
Aitana Sanchez-Gijon
Anthony Quinn

Dying Young (1991)
Drama, Romance
As the title suggests, a love story threatened by death. Some wine country scenes.
Cast:
Julia Roberts
Colleen Dewhurst
Ellen Burstyn

Black Rain (1989)
Action, Adventure.
This is a stretch for a wine country movie since there is just a shoot up scene in a vineyard. Most of the action takes place in New York and Japan. Two New York cops get involved in a gang war between members of the Japanese Mafia.
Cast:
Michael Douglas
Andy Garcia
Kate Capshaw

Howard the Duck (1986)
Comedy
This duck was a turkey. Some scenes filmed at a now boarded up "restaurant" on the Carneros Highway just outside Napa.
Cast:
Lea Thompson
Jeffrey Jones
Tim Robbins

Apocalypse Now (1979)
Action, Drama, War, Adventure
A controversial Vietnam move about a Green Beret who set himself up as a God over a local tribe. A former Napa High student reports: "The sound effects were done at Memorial Stadium using Napa High School students. We did a lot of yelling as a group for the riot scene with the USO. Several students were then kept after the group was released and were taped running on the steps and the grass with and without shoes."
Some exterior shots were also done in the valley.
Director: Francis Ford Coppola (owner of Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery in Rutherford)
Cast:
Marlon Brando
Robert Duvall
Martin Sheen
Sam Bottoms
Laurence Fishburne
Dennis Hopper
Harrison Ford

Gates of Heaven (1978)
Documentary
A fascinating and highly rated documentary about a pet cemetery, Bubbling Well Pet Memorial Park, located just outside Napa, CA and the people who have pets buried there.

Killer Bees (1974) (TV)
Horror
A domineering woman has a strange hold over her winemaking family, and a colony of bees.
Cast:
Gloria Swanson
Kate Jackson
Don McGovern
Edward Albert
Craig Stevens

Deadly Harvest (1972) (TV)
Drama
Living as a California winegrower, an Iron Curtain defector leans that he is being stalked by Soviets. Exterior scenes at a house just north of Yountville.
Cast:
Richard Boone
Michael Constantine
Patty Duke

This Earth is Mine (1959)
Drama
Plans to consolidate the holdings of a wealthy winegrowing family through marriage are thwarted by youth and passion.
Cast:
Rock Hudson
Jean Simmons
Claude Rains
Dorothy McGuire

The Unholy Wife (1957)

A young temptress marries a wealthy vintner, only to become bored, commit adultery and plot murder.
Cast:
Rod Steiger
Tom Tryon
Marie Windsor
Diana Dors

They Knew What They Wanted (1940)
Drama, Romance
Filmed on location in a very rural Napa Valley, some landmarks are recognizable. Worth watching for the history, alone.
Cast:
Tom Ewell
Frank Fay
William Gargan
Charles Laughton
Carole Lombard
Karl Malden
Remake of: Lady to Love, A (1930) and Secret Hour, The (1928)

In California’s Gold Country
Nearly everyone has had a disappointing experience with supermarket-bought summer berries. You're doing your weekly grocery shopping and are tempted by the blueberry special – only $2.99! – so you buy a package or two and bring them home. The hammer falls, however, when you sprinkle them on your morning cereal the next day only to find that the berries are moldy.
