Coastal Sonoma County While you visit wine regions in Sonoma County , don’t forget that Sonoma County is also known for its beautiful, dramatic coastline and pictorial coastal towns. If your trip allows, take a day and drive out River Road along the Russian River and once you reach the coast, take Highway 1 north toward Mendocino and explore Fort Ross , Sea Ranch and Point Arena. Take Highway 1 south and head for Bodega Bay . Wineries While there are quite a few wineries planting vineyards on the coastal ridges in far western Sonoma County , primarily planted in cooler-climate varietals such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, these coastal operations are for the most part not open to the public. Visiting them requires advance planning; appointments are a must. Dining and Special Places The Sonoma Coast offers some truly interesting and eclectic dining options. Starting in Jenner at the mouth of the Russian River , don’t miss the Rivers End Restaurant and Inn . Heading south to Bodega Bay , you’ll find the inspired, natural and organic coastal cuisine of the Seaweed Café. Also in Bodega Bay are more conventional but no less terrific restaurants like The Duck Club at the Bodega Bay Lodge, Bodega Harbour Restaurant and The Tides Restaurant at the Inn at the Tides. Worth a stop as you make your way through Bodega Bay on winding Highway 1 is Gourmet Au Bay — a unique wine tasting room right on the water. Put together a flight of wines and taste them on the protected patio overlooking the bay. Also, in nearby Freestone — itself a hotbed of new vineyard development — is Osmosis Enzyme Bath and Massage. Make time for some Zen-like pampering. |
