BARREL
HEAD LANDSCAPES

country landscapes play prominently in the work of Sonoma County artist Dana
Hawley, known for her representational and emotionally charged paintings. Married
to famed winemaker John Hawley of Hawley Winery, Dana has incorporated one of
the materials indigenous to the winery scene, the wine barrel, as a canvas of
sort for her work. Specifically, she has chosen the head of the wine barrel as
a way of framing her creations. As she points out, the round shape of the barrel
heads corresponds to the world we really see, circular as visualized from our
round eyes. With most paintings, television, and computer screens, perspective
is squared. To this novel circular vision, Dana has applied beautiful, vibrant
colors depicting spectacular Sonoma County wine country views.
