ord is spreading fast among Central Coast foodies about Shawn’s on Main, Chef Shawn Washborn’s ten-table restaurant that offers bargain-priced small plates and an excellent list of mostly Central Coast wines. The dining experience at Shawn’s is a lot like a sushi bar: diners order a couple of dishes, then a few more, and every generously portioned plate is $10 or less.

The intimate eatery, boldly colored in red, yellow and black with splashes of cobalt from the Riesling-bottle lights over each table, reflects Washburn’s passionate culinary character. His skill is immediately proven by an amuse-bouche of Ahi Tartare with Avocado Wasabi Sorbet and this impression is borne out with seasonal dishes like Salmon with Basil Vegetable Couscous and Tiger Shrimp with Thai curry, all prepared to complement wine or a selection of sakes.

Amazingly, Washburn cooks everything himself, employing a single assistant on busy nights. Even in an equally intimate room, it is rare to eat food prepared directly by the chef.
