August 2005--Wine Recommendations
Virtual Tasting Room —Frog's Leap
By Thom Elkjer
With a nod to French wines and a sense of humor firmly planted in American, Frog's Leap features wryly amusing wines that uncork with a friendly "Ribbit".
Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc Rutherford 2004 ($16.50): smoothly assertive aromas of chalk, cut grass, peapods and a hint of citrus; juicy grapefruit flavors join the mix in your mouth, zinging up the mid-palate and setting up a long surprisingly warm finish. |
Frog’s Leap White Table Wine Napa Valley “Leapfrögmilch” 2004 ($14): clover honey, cut celery and orange zest aromas set the stage for a smooth Riesling ride in your mouth. Good body, zingy texture, a juicy mid-palate and a long, cool finish made me hungry for something Thai. |
Frog’s Leap Syrah Napa Valley 2003 ($25): a traditional French take on Syrah: earthy, meaty aromas mingle with pomegranate and plum juice, then you fill your mouth with a drily engaging wine that tastes more savory than fruity, and finishes more elegantly beefy than berry. Try this with cassoulet. |
Frog’s Leap Zinfandel Napa Valley 2003 ($25): smells like Kobe beef ready for the grill, with a bowl of cut-open red plums sitting next to it; tastes like lip-smacking Zinfandel with good wood, a nice fluffy texture, voluptuous palate weight, and a fruity finish. |
