And now for some news about air travel that doesn’t involve bankruptcy, flight cancellations or fare increases. In fact, this bit of air travel news is decidedly good – that is if you’re a wine fan, and by reading this space I’m guessing you’ve got at least a passing interest in the topic.

It was announced recently that ExpressJet Airlines will offer as part of their in-flight beverage assortment cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley and sauvignon blanc from Lake County–served in single-portion boxes from Chameleon Cellars. This means that for the low $3 price per box, passengers aboard one of the world’s largest operators of regional planes, with connector and commuter flights in the Southeast and Western U.S., can enjoy the fine wine experience en route to their next board meeting. How can you go wrong with that? Well, I suppose you could show up to the board meeting with a red-toothed grin, but that’s another issue.

But even better with this story, is that aboard ExpressJet flights, your wine order comes complete with cheese and crackers and gourmet sandwiches and wraps. That sounds more like a California picnic than a business-minded flight from Austin to Ontario. I know something about what the air inside an airplane at 30,000 feet does to wine – from tannins to finish, but that’s another topic for another day. For now, I salute ExpressJet and their efforts to air travel well, and to use wine as a means for doing so.
