Hamlet – the Danish prince at the center of the eponymous Shakespearean tragedy – had some fairly significant problems on the brain when he coined the now-famous phrase, “get thee to a nunnery”
in a particularly dramatic scene in the acclaimed play. Happily, those considering heading to Sonoma this Labor Day weekend have much less troublesome reasons to get themselves thither – three food- and wine-filled days’ worth of reasons, to be specific.
Beginning Friday, August 29th and continuing through the weekend, the Sonoma County Showcase of Wine & Food – AKA Sonoma Wine Country Weekend
– celebrates the spirit, people and products that make Sonoma one of the world’s foremost epicurean destinations. At the heart of the event is Saturday’s splashy TASTE of Sonoma reception at MacMurray Ranch in Healdsburg, where more than 200 wineries and chefs will sample their goods for those lucky enough to score tickets to the banner event (tickets were still available at press time). And Sunday night will see the highlight of the weekend in the annual Sonoma Valley Harvest Wine Auction at Cline Cellars, where highly anticipated live auction lots will include a culinary trip to Paris inspired by – what else? – Julia Child’s favorite gastronomic haunts and a week in Florence in an apartment on the elegant Piazza dell’Olio.
Need any more reasons to get thee Sonoma-bound? We didn’t think so.
