West Wines’ tasting room is a small gem tucked away under a huge oak tree and several persimmon trees mere steps from the vineyard. Take a seat, smell the wine and the roses, bring a picnic, or just stay in the quaint tasting room under the crystal chandelier. You may also encounter the beautiful blue flatbed Ford truck from 1932 which hauled milk before becoming a winery truck and now lives in our 100-year old blue barn. Katarina, the winemaker and her husband Bengt are owners and run most aspects of the business together. Their love for age-worthy red wines and crisp whites made them start the winery in 1998 to create European styled wines from their own sustainably farmed vineyards.
Our flagship Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is not released until seven years after harvest. It is the first American wine which was ever served at the Nobel Awards Banquet and was selected at a blind tasting. Katarina sets aside 10 % of each vintage to further mature and be available in our tasting room for unique library tastings of vertical vintages. This allows you to experience how the wines reach even more interesting and nuanced flavors with time.
The West Flight of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Crest Cuvee (our red Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc) and Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve gives you a sample of our wine style and, if you like the wines, this tasting also includes a special offer on the collection of the four wines. The Library Tasting will include our West Flight but also other wines from our Library Collection such as Viognier, a crisp and aromatic dry white wine, our Italian Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet blend, Late Harvest Viognier dessert wine and Cabernet Sauvignon Reserves. We like to show off our older well aged Cabernet Sauvignon with local gourmet cheeses, and the last weekend of the month you can experience The Vertical Vintage and Cheese Tasting with Cabernet Sauvignon starting at the year 2009 going vertical to 2006 and savor them paired with selected cheeses. Special events include music evenings, wine and food pairings, dog walks and the owners’ Swedish heritage is celebrated at occasions like Scandinavian Christmas in the Tasting Room when you can try Katarina’s Glögg.
At our Weekly Vineyard Hikes, glass in hand, we discuss the year in the vineyard and our sustainable farming methods. We come back to the tasting room to finish your tasting and you can also continue with lunch. Bring your picnic or pre-order a lunch box. Our winemaker/owner Katarina also runs unique Harvest Grape Sampling Hikes in August-October. She will take you into the vineyard for an hour long hike and show how to measure sugar, pH and, best of all, taste the grapes before harvest. In our Cabernet vineyards, you will also have lovely views of the entire Dry Creek Valley. Reserve a spot at least the day before.
