Hiya Hawkeye. Glad that we are still in touch. Hope you and the Mrs are well.
I think that you may enjoy reading the offerings at the auction in my post- I recognize some of the wineries from your travels.
We can't be there unfortunately, but we're still in temporary housing so there is nowhere for more wine anyway.
I think that you would enjoy some offerings from our friends in Chapel Hill as well- very nice wine shop with great prices. After shipping it may not be quite as good, but he gets some wines that you won't find elsewhere in the country.
All the best to you and yours...have a safe and wonderful holiday.

Well Happy Birthday to Mrs. Hawkeye, and I hope you had a lovely day.
Sounds like a wonderful event, Hawkeye. I hope we will find a local vendor of similar caliber soon.
Regarding that- want to share a resource with my wine friends here. I've been keeping in touch with our old wine shop in chapel Hill, and the newsletter is so enticing that I just have to share with y'all.
I'm not sure if Todd can ship to you, but you can settle that between you if he has something of interest to sell.
The website is: www.chapelhillwinecompany.com
and if you sign up for the newsletter you will be captivated by the proprietors' wine knowledge and their writing skill- they could sell ice to Eskimos! Honestly, sometimes I want to lick the page

Best wishes to all of my wine friends- hope this season finds you healthy, happy and well-stocked for the holidays!

Last night Mrs. Hawkeye and I attended the 3rd Annual Stock Your Cellar Event sponsored by Riverside Wine & Spirits adnd St. John's Restaurant. This tasting was run like a tasting in Napa Valley only there were 34 wines to taste from Champaign to Cabernet. I believe Mrs. Hawkeye checked out every one of them. We came home after ordering 3 different varieties or wineries. Of course, Cab dominated.

This event is offered each year to clear out the current vintage getting ready for the new vintages to begin arriving soon.

Our first purchase was a Brown Vineyard 2011 Zinfandel. It had lots of fruit and a peppery finish. Rivals the Zins of Dry Creek Road od Sonoma. Best of all, the $59.99 per bottle was reduced to $34.99.

Then we hit the Cabs and drooled over the Buccella Mica 2011. I have some of their Cab in my cooler, but had not tasted the Mica, a Cab blend but mostly Cab. It was big and bold with a velvety finish and at $65.00 I could afford it since it was reduced from $109.99, a $44.00 savings

Our third purchase was a 2007 Highlands Cab from Howell Mountain. It was rich with berries and a smooth tannin finish. It was selling for $74.99.

We have never visited either the Buccella or the Highland wineries, but will try and do so in March.

To show you what a piker I am, the friends we were with purchased 20 cases of Shafer Merlot at $21.99 I think he liked this wine.

Friday night we will meet friends at St. John's Restaurant to celebrate Mrs. Hawkeye's ?? birthday. I will be taking a three bottle flight of J. Gregory Cab, the 2006, 2007 and 2009. They did not make a 2008 vintage.

Life is very, very good.

-Hawkeye
