Ever wonder why you love chardonnay but there’s this whole cohort out there in the “ABC” (anything but chardonnay) crowd? Or why you can’t get enough rosé – literally any day – but your best friend wouldn’t even order a glass poolside in the middle of rosé season?

Yes, it’s in large part due to our different palates and preferences, as well as what flavors and traditions we have been exposed to. But what if there were more to it? What if our zodiac sign determined what kind of wine we would like?

With that in mind, we decided to create a whimsical guide to what your zodiac sign says about what you should be drinking in our first ever wine horoscope.

It’s in the Stars: Your Wine Horoscope

FIRE SIGNS

Much like fire itself, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius cannot be ignored. They are passionate, driven, and courageous, making them great leaders and seriously dynamic individuals.

Aries

March 21 – April 19
Aries are pioneering and adventurous, forging paths and taking charge. The ram is a force to be reckoned with, but this dynamism can also make Aries impulsive and hot-tempered, so easy does it with this zodiac sign.

Pick a wine that can pack a punch – something big and bold like you. Think zinfandel, petite sirah, cabernet sauvignon, and amarone.

Wine to try: Goosecross Cellars Zinfandel, Napa Valley, CA, $42

Leo

July 23 – August 22
Like the King or Queen of the Jungle, Leo is a proud, majestic leader with a huge heart and an expressive nature. They are generous and loyal, and – surprise, surprise – love to be the center of attention.

Of course the proud lion should sip the King of wine grapes: cabernet sauvignon. Red wine not your thing? Try a soft and juicy rosé of cabernet sauvignon.

Wine to try: Louis M. Martini Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, CA, $35

Sagittarius

November 22 – December 21
Sagittarians are freedom-loving knowledge-seekers, worldly and on a perpetual search for enlightenment and exploration.

As someone who loves the joy of discovery, you are always open to new things. Why not explore some of the lesser-known grape varieties like vermentino, albariño, touriga nacional, or blaufränkisch?

Wine to try: Oak Farm Vineyards Albariño, Lodi, CA, $22

AIR SIGNS

Air signs are the intellectuals of the zodiac. But they aren’t just thinkers, they are doers as well. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are known for their sharp minds and rational, well-reasoned thought, making them great problem solvers and communicators.

Gemini

May 21 – June 20
Geminis are youthful, quick, and adaptable. They are also the most talkative zodiac sign, so expect them to be social, articulate, and openly communicative.

Guess what wine goes with everything, and is perfect in social settings, just like a Gemini? Sparkling wine! Champagne not in the budget for you? There are so many different expressions of sparkling wine in white, rosé, and red, you are bound to find one you like.

Wine to try: Foundry Blanc de Noirs, Sonoma Coast, CA, $58

Libra

September 23 – October 22
Natural peacemakers, Libra represents balance and diplomacy – they are symbolized by scales, after all. This zodiac sign can focus on both thought and emotion to assess situations and relationships.

As a Libra, you love harmony, so look for a wine that has all elements in balance. The best rieslings have racy acidity to keep it juicy and quaffable, making it the perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of dishes.

Wine to try: Brooks Ara Riesling, Willamette Valley, OR, $38

Aquarius

January 20 – February 18
Aquarius is represented by the Water Bearer – a symbol of the gods bringing nourishment to the earth. Understandably, Aquarians are characterized by their deep-rooted spirit of humanity and community, always working for the greater good.

Embrace your connection to the earth and humanity with a wine that has a strong sense of terroir, like a pinot noir or tempranillo.

Wine to try: Campo Viejo The Red Blend, Rioja, SP, $12

WATER SIGNS

Water signs – Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces – are sensitive beings. This sentimentality leads them to hang onto things, seek out emotional experiences, and surround themselves with reminders of people, places, and things that they care most about.

Cancer

June 21 – July 22
While they may seem tough on the outside, like the crab that symbolizes them, Cancer is one of the most loyal and protective friends you can have. Ruled by the moon, symbolizing comfort and security, this zodiac sign tends to be a homebody who prefers safe, familiar spaces.

Instead of your usual, opt for something like sangiovese, barbera, or cabernet franc. Get to know these grapes and you’ll find, underneath their rugged exterior, they are some of the most reliable wine choices out there.

Wine to try: Muscardini Cellars Sangiovese, Sonoma Valley, CA, $65

Scorpio

October 23 – November 21
Scorpios are determined and assertive, and live to shed light on unanswered questions. Rather than focusing on what’s in front of them, they prefer to dig deeper to find hidden treasures in the world, and in life.

As a Scorpio, you will delight in discovering a wine whose beauty may not reveal itself right away, but emerges in time, so try a grape that is intended to age. The tannic, yet spectacularly elegant nebbiolo, or a big, peppery syrah, is the perfect choice.

Wine to try: Leoness Cellars Alessandro Vineyard Syrah, Temecula Valley, CA, $60

Pisces

February 19 – March 20
Symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions, Pisces tend to live in the space between illusion and reality. Deeply empathetic and emotional, Pisces also love to escape to their imaginations, making them one of the most creative zodiac signs.

There are plenty of winemakers experimenting with how different grapes play well together, so your wine horoscope tells you to indulge your imaginative side by choosing one of the many offbeat blends out there.

Wine to try: Tank Garage Winery Fast & Loose Red Blend, California, CA, $52

EARTH SIGNS

Earth signs are the most pragmatic and grounded – literally – of the zodiac. They are strong, reliable, practical, and disciplined, with an impressive work ethic. Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are the true salt-of-the-earth zodiac signs, who also enjoy the finer things in life, making them great people to know, both personally and professionally.

Taurus

April 20 – May 20
While Taurus may be stubborn, this zodiac sign is also ambitious, tenacious, and resilient. But don’t let that rugged determination fool you. Ruled by Venus, Taureans also love the more luxurious, sensual things in life.

A structured, enduring, and opulent wine is the only way to go for you, Taurus. Treat yourself to one of wine’s greatest cabernet- or merlot-based blends – Bordeaux.

Wine to try: Chateau de Pez Saint-Estèph, Bordeaux, FR, $55

Virgo

August 23 – September 22
Virgos are characterized by extraordinary attention-to-detail. They also have a strong sense of humanity, which, when combined with their observant nature, makes them great life coaches, able to help others reach their full potential.

Snag a bottle of razor-sharp sauvignon blanc. Your keen eye for detail will help you discern and appreciate the unique qualities of this grape, depending on where it’s grown.

Wine to try: Matetic EQ Coastal Sauvignon Blanc, Casablanca Valley, CH, $16

Capricorn

December 22 – January 19
Capricorns are hard-working and persistent, making them natural born leaders who will stop at nothing to reach a goal. They are also said to become more playful and mischievous as they age, which helps them balance their workaholic nature. It’s work hard, play hard for Capricorns.

As one of the main grapes in Champagne, and the grape of white Burgundy, chardonnay pulls its weight when it comes to important wines. It’s also age-worthy and versatile, just like you, dear Capricorn.

Wine to try: Sonoma-Cutrer Russian River Ranches Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, CA, $28
