While all of us at WineCountry.com aren’t deep into sportsball. Those of us that are know how to through a good game day party. Super Bowl Sunday is second only to Thanksgiving when it comes to American food consumption, but your game day eats need not be as unrefined as the food they serve at football stadiums. Instead, put a gourmet spin on comfort food classics at home and pairing them with these carefully chosen wine country favorites. Who says sports and wine can’t be compatible?

First Quarter

La Crema Tasting Room
235 Healdsburg Ave
Healdsburg, CA 95448
(707) 431-9400

Kick off your munchies with a spin on chips and dip with La Crema Winery’s citrus and fennel-seasoned shrimp ceviche, a dish much brighter than the typical seven-layer dip and without all the fat (okay, without some of the fat). The delicate flavor of the poached shrimp pairs well with a medium-bodied white wine like La Crema’s Monterey Pinot Gris, whose notes of spice and lemon fit perfectly with the zesty lime of the ceviche.

Insider tip: The Pinot Gris is a valuable wine when it comes to food pairings, nicely complimenting light pastas, other seafoods, or even salads like the next entry…

Second Quarter

Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery
8761 Dry Creek Rd
Healdsburg, CA 95448
(800) 831-0381

Go green on game day and make a big salad as a lighter alternative. Don’t worry we’ve got some of the football staples coming up. Throw together Ferrari-Carano’s apple, fennel and blue cheese salad for a chill, easy to create second course. Flavorful components like fennel, Roquefort cheese and Dijon mustard go best with a bold white wine, like the Upper Ridge Riesling from Imagery Winery. The wine’s sweetness cuts through the tangy sharpness of the blue cheese and, like all the best pairings, creates its own taste sensation.

Insider tip: Opt for an older Riesling whenever possible, as the grape’s unusually high acidity makes this varietal improve with age.

Half Time

Jordan Vineyard and Winery
1474 Alexander Valley Rd
Healdsburg, CA 95448
(707) 431-5250

Chicken wings are a food inextricably linked to sporting events, but no sports bar creates hot wings quite as complex as Jordan Winery’s Duck à l’Orange-esque take on the classic. Their citrus-spiced fried chicken is an involved recipe of spicy-sweet flavors that together create a crispy, complex appetizer you’ll be returning to during every commercial break. For pairings, consider something cooling and crisp, like Jordan’s various vintage chardonnays.

Insider tip: If you’re ready to switch from whites to red for the night (remember, there’s no going back), instead pair the Ferrari-Carano Merlot to match the flavor intensity of this spicy poultry treat.

Third Quarter

Bosko’s Trattoria
1364 Lincoln Ave,
Calistoga, CA 94515

Pizza is to Super Bowl Sunday as turkey is to Thanksgiving, but forego the usual delivery and partake in this Italian specialty homemade style— a Napoletana-style Margherita pizza recipe from Chef Jon Seeger of Boskos Trattoria is a crowd-pleaser that will have you feeling (and looking) like an artisanal pizza maker! Of course, great pizza always starts with the pizza dough. The secret to creating authentic, restaurant-quality pizza dough at home without the benefit of a traditional wood-fired oven? Time. Get this dough started a bit earlier and you won’t regret this menu addition.

Insider tip: When paired with a Nalle Winery 2011 Zinfandel, all of the flavors are given a chance to shine.

Fourth Quarter

Mill Creek Vineyards & Winery
1401 Westside Rd
Healdsburg, CA 95448
(707) 431-2121

The wine and food pairing are one and the same this time, as Mill Creek Winery’s brownie recipe has chewy port-infused cherries baked right into their batter. Mill Creek’s Dessert Wine is made in the port style with Merlot grapes and fortified with brandy, and it pairs nicely with something as simple and chocolatey as old-fashioned brownies. Hopefully you’ll be celebrating your team’s assured victory by the time you get to enjoy this decadent dessert.

Insider tip: For a simpler dessert that involves no baking, pair the port with whatever variety of cheese, nuts or chocolate you have on hand.
