The Hess Collection Winery

It takes vision to look 30 years into the future and know that high on Mount Veeder would be home to some of Napa Valley’s best Cabernet Sauvignon. Passion and dedication led Donald Hess to Mount Veeder to craft world renowned wines.

Donald Hess became interested in mountain winegrowing during a business trip to the Napa Valley in the mid-1970s. He found that Mount Veeder vineyards had the ideal combination of soils and microclimates to produce wine grapes of distinctive character. His unwavering vision to challenge convention and cultivate the very best fruit from hardworking vines grown on the benchlands, hillsides and ridge tops is the foundation of The Hess Collection, where the appreciation for unique mountain fruit is expressed in wine and a visually stunning experience.

By following Donald’s credo “nurture the land and return what you take,” we strive to be responsible in our winegrowing and business practices, providing stewardship of our land for future generations. Since 1978, The Hess Collection has conducted business with long-term sustainability in mind. Today, under the stewardship of Tim Persson (Donald’s son-in-law) and his wife Sabrina, the winery continues to thrive with next generation of Hess family leadership.

Artistry and consistency are required to craft world class wines. In 1999, Donald Hess hired Dave Guffy as Director of Winemaking for The Hess Collection. As a winemaker, Guffy places special emphasis on what happens in the vineyards, where he spends time year-round. “I have a strong belief in making wine in the vineyard, working each site to absolutely maximize flavors,” says Gu¬ffy. “My goal is to make ripe fruit forward California style wines with both power and elegance.”

The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860s, in a native stone building hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art.

The Hess Collection is opened daily from 10-5:30 and offers daily tastings, tours, wine & food experiences, and access to our contemporary art museum.
