Affectionately known as the 'Still on the Hill,' a visit to this Napa Valley icon will lead you through the world of small batch winemaking & on into the world of Alambic distilling – perhaps with a cigar in hand.
Charbay is authentic, as charming as the classic small wineries you find on the back roads of Europe. Here is a true artisan family run winery-distillery that ferments & distills small releases of wonderful wines, aperitifs, ports & other dessert wines made with their own barrel-aged Alambic brandies.
As you come up the driveway, watch for one of the family's classic copper French Alambic Pot Stills.
Miles and Marko are considered founding pioneers in the American artisan distillery movement and are considered two of the top distillers in the U.S. today. The Karakasevic family carries on the heritage of 12 generations. Miles, who was born & trained in Europe, is one of the few Master Distillers in America with a European distilling background.
Charbay’s passion for ‘Old World’ winemaking leans to classic European – whole berry fermentation in open fermenters, ‘pump overs’ to maximize flavor extraction and up to 4 years of aging before the wines are released.
Visits are hosted by Charbay family member John Reagh, who brings alive the charm of winemaking & distilling. Enjoy the fun stories about how this small independent family makes their vast array of wines & ports. You'll be tasting right in the winery beside one of the stills.
